China as a Responsible Power Amid the COVID-19 Crisis: Perceptions of Partners and Adversaries on Twitter

The challenging COVID-19 context has questioned China’s role as a responsible power but also tested its relationship with other states. This study seeks to investigate ‘How actors have perceived amid the crisis’. To do so, we opt for qualitative approach examining official Twitter accounts of seven that hold different types relationships China, namely Brazil, EU, Japan, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, and USA. We aim identify perceptions these towards China unfolding from January June 2020, emphasising empirical applicability Twitter’s discourse. By adopting concept approached Role Theory perspective, this paper contributes more nuanced understanding interstate relations perceptions. Our findings indicate there been variations in responses states expressed while framing differs significantly during crisis landmark events.
